Happiest People in Asia

Despite the many problems hounding the Philippines, Filipinos still consider themselves as among the happiest people in the world. Results of regional surveys conducted by MTV-Asia, ACNielsen and the Economist magazine have indicated that Filipinos are the happiest people in Asia.

But in the World Values Survey conducted by University of Michigan in 1998, the Philippines was ranked 12th among 54 countries in the world in terms of happiness index. Among Asian countries, it was ranked first. According to the survey, the top ten happiest nations in the world were Iceland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Australia, Ireland, Switzerland, Great Britain and Venezuela

In a survey conducted by Social Weather Stations (SWS) in November 2001, 57 percent of the 1,200 respondents said they were very proud to be Filipinos while 34 percent claimed they were proud of their national identity. Only 9 percent said they were not proud and 1 percent claimed they were not proud at all of becoming Filipinos. The respondents also cited the following qualities of the Filipinos: God-centered, industrious, faithful, has convictions, responsible, peaceful and law-abiding, and loving and caring.

Multi-hued costumes are worn, mimicking the various blooms of the highland region (or any of its 11 ethnic tribes). These are flowerbeds - disguised, of course, as the Panagbenga parade floats. http://www.tourism.gov.ph/discover/festi…

Obviously disturbed by this, she called the air Hostess..

'Madam, what is the matter,' the hostess asked. '
You obviously do not see it then?' she responded. '

I will go to see if another place is available.' The Hostess went

How to Marry a Filipina or Filipino

If you are foreign and want to marry a Filipina of Filipino, here are some things you want to consider.

These are Filipino habits and traditions to learn to understand what a Pinoy is.

1. Close family ties, not just with parents and siblings but includes extended family

2. Related to the first, but not necessarily: Politeness and respect for elders, no first-name basis; even strangers, depending on age, are called lolo or lola, tito or tita, kuya or ate (grandpa, grandma, uncle, aunt, older brother, older sister). Such as Tita Ana, Kuya Artemio. Ate pronounces a-te, 2 syllables.

3. Naturally hospitable and sometimes gregarious; if they have visitors, meals are part of the hospitality.

4. They love to eat, together. Don't be surprised if the family uses spoons and forks at home --- spoons to eat rice, both to tear up meat and cut up larger chunks of veggies. Rice is the staple food, not bread or potatoes.

Even if the above 4 are not your habits, adapt, and it will be appreciated.

5. Men can be very sweet. The decent kind has no qualms of meeting your parents. If he is still very Filipino, he might be initially tongue-tied around them but he will smile and be respectful. He might call them Uncle and Auntie.

6. Filipinos are good at courting, may woo you and put you on a pedestal. Don't be surprised if he can carry a tune and sings to you. Filipino women are still conservative (especially in their teens and early 20's).

"Opo" - means yes and is used only for older people about your parents' age.
"Salamat" is thank you, "Salamat po" thank you, used for elders.
"Kain na" -- Let's eat.
“Tapos na po” is finish or done. Used for elders.
"mahal kita" is I Love You.

Bahay Kubo, Kahit Munti

One of the oldest and most popular Philippine folk song is Bahay Kubo (Nipa Hut). It is traditionally taught to most Filipino children at a young age, usually by their mother. Even in schools, this famous folk song is customarily performed during “Philippine Folk Week” celebrations. Bahay Kubo is also popularly used as part of a medley tune, together with other famous Philippine folk songs, by rondalla groups and composers.

                                           Bahay Kubo Song
Bahay kubo, kahit munti
Ang halaman doon ay sari-sari.
Singkamas at talong, sigadilyas at mani
Sitaw, bataw, patani.
Kundol, patola, upo’t kalabasa
At saka mayroon pang labanos, mustasa,
sibuyas, kamatis, bawang at luya
                                               sa paligid-ligid ay puro linga.

Bahay Kubo in English

My Humble Hut Song

My humble hut, may look tiny,
but the veggies around it, sure are many.
Yam beans and eggplants, wing’d beans and peanuts,
string, hyacinth and lima beans. Winter melon and loofah,
bottl’ gourd, squash, et cetera. There is more, amiga,
radish, mustard, yeah! Onions, tomatoes
garlic and ginger. If you look all around,
sesame seeds abound!

The Bahay Kubo is the native house of the Philippines and is also considered as its national shelter. Made of indigenous building materials like bamboo and nipa, this pre-Hispanic architecture was constructed to perfectly adapt to the tropical climate of the Philippines and to be easily repaired or rebuilt once damaged by typhoon, flood or earthquake which frequented the country. Its name is said to have originated from the Spanish word, cubo, which means “cube,” because of the bahay kubo 's rectangular/cubic shape.

10 Distinctions of a Filipino from other Races

Many things have changed in the Philippines. Few presidents have passed. Some EDSA revolutions have succeeded, also some not. Circumstances we can not forget as Pinoy: coup d’etat, accidents, floods, earthquakes and so forth . Lots of changes in the environment, MRT, C5, Baywalk at Manila Bay and several high-rise buildings. Jobs provide high income in the country came like call centers.

What makes a Filipino Different from other races?

1. Bagoong- food that is for Filipinos is very delicious and when cooked is truly cling to the curtains, but for us is so good and yummy especially when deep with kare-kare.

2. Meryenda- Where can you see a person that when having snack makes five times a day and sometimes takes more? That makes a Pinoy.

3. Pasalubong- in any corner of the Philippines, other parts of the world, we pinoy dont forget the ones we love to give presents. This result even five more exist baggage.

4. Balikbayan Box after Pasalubong. Where do you see the foreigners at major airports in the world with big box? Once opened, surely the farthest relatives have soap, coffee and Corned Beef. (It’s like we don’t have it here).

5. Sawsawan- this comes with delicious meals in our dining room. Our meal is not complete without fish sauce, fish sauce-Mansi, vinegar, spicy vinegar, soy sauce, bagoong, etc..

6. Paliligo 2-3 times a day even winter in other countries we are still bathing.

7. Po and Opo- the word mark of respect for older and have more authority. No other race have this.

8. Kamayan-style – eating meals that uses hands instead of using spoon. Together with dried fish, tomatoes, bagoong and with one foot on chair. Yumyum

9. Tabo- I think only Filipino uses tabo when taking a bath or going to the toilet. No more tissue for us.

10.  Jollibee- wherever you are, for sure you will miss Jollibee. Lucky for you (if you are in another country)  if you are close to areas with Jollibee.

There are plenty of things that separates Filipinos to other nations. Others are beautiful, others are annoying, but we accept it because we are Filipinos and they are part of our culture.

What Makes You a Pinoy? or Pinay?

Pinoy is a demonym used by Filipinos for their compatriots in the Philippines and around the world. Filipinos usually refer to themselves informally as Pinoy or some times feminine: Pinay, which is formed by taking the last four letters of the word 'Filipino' and adding the diminutive suffix -y. The word was coined by expatriate Filipino Americans during the 1920s and was later adopted by Filipinos in the Philippines.

Pinoy is another term for a male citizen of the Philippines. Pinay is the term of a female citizen of the Philippines. Both their parents must be 100 % Filipino.

Lets say the father is Chinese and the mother is Filipina, then we call the sibling as Tsinoy.
